Feit Electric

A smart-home app that leads with rooms, not devices

A concept app for controlling Feit Electric smart lighting. Most smart-home apps present a flat list of paired devices, which matches how the hardware is registered and not how anyone reasons about their house. This set organizes the same controls by room first — kitchen, living room, garage — and treats the device list as the secondary view. Alongside control it covers the two screens these apps usually bury: what the lighting is costing, and what it is saving.

The idea

A smart bulb is registered as a device, so most apps for them show you a list of devices. That is the manufacturer’s model, not the customer’s. Nobody stands in their kitchen thinking about a paired endpoint; they think kitchen.

So the primary screen here is rooms, each showing what is on and what it is drawing. Devices still exist — you need them to pair hardware and to fix things — but they sit behind a tab rather than in front of the person who just wants the pendants off.

The other decision worth naming is that consumption is a first-class screen rather than a settings page. A smart bulb’s whole commercial argument is that it costs less to run, and an app that never shows you the number is not making the argument it was bought on.
